Okay, I found it in php options, host site. Thanks.

In the meantime, these several edits seem to have worked: I am now being logged out of the front-end as a regular user when the session time is exceeded without activity.
On the Admin Home Dashboard I still show as being logged in, but I'm guessing the automated logging off is not registering here.
The bottom line: regular users are now being logged off, so I'm satisfied.
